How to rent a car in Switzerland

To be able to rent a car in Switzerland, you must have:

  • A current valid driver's license
  • Two proofs of address, such as a utility bill or bank statement that is no more than three months old
  • Additional photo ID, such as a passport 
  • One major credit card in your name
  • An international driving permit is required for non-European driver's license holders

What is the legal age to rent a car in Switzerland?

Age 21 - 24

  • Cars available for rent include Mini, Economy, Compact, Compact Wagon, Compact Elite, Intermediate Crossover, Compact SUV, and Compact Elite SUV. 
  • A young driver's fee of 21.34 CHF per day will apply. Prices are subject to change. 

Age 25 and Older

Cars available for rent include those listed above, plus Intermediate, Standard, Full Size, Premium, and Luxury. 

Can I rent a car in Switzerland and drive to a nearby country?

Cross-border travel is permitted to Austira, Belgium, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, and Sweden only. 

Tips for driving in Switzerland

Be sure to keep the following info in mind during your Switzerland trip: 

- You must have your headlights on at all times, day or night. 

- On multi-lane roads, you must pass on the left. It is prohibited to pass on the right. 

- It is customary to turn off your engine while waiting at stop lights. 

- You cannot turn right on a red light.
